Udomowieni przedstawiciele Gallus gallus dostarczają ludziom ogromnej mięsa oraz jaj. W samej Polsce liczbę niosek szacuje się na 48,4 mln (stan na rok 2016, według Krajowej Rady Drobiarskiej), zaś w Unii Europejskiej 382,8 mln (stan na rok 2015, według zootecnicainternational.com). Większość ptaków utrzymywana jest w produkcji wielkotowarowej, ale konsumenci coraz chętniej poszukują produktów pochodzących z alternatywnych źródeł.
