Zwiększona świadomość konsumentów dotycząca jakości produktów spożywczych jest jednym z głównych motorów napędzającym badania nad systemami chowu zwierząt, ich dobrostanem oraz utrzymaniem zdrowia. Jednym z ważnych czynników mających wpływ na zdrowie oraz wyniki produkcyjne u drobiu jest jego mikrobiom jelitowy, czyli ogólnie mówiąc zbiór drobnoustrojów zasiedlających organizm.
