Zdrowe jelita w znacznym stopniu wpływają na zdrowie całego organizmu zwierzęcia, dobrostan, wydajność stada, a także bezpieczeństwo produktów oraz środowiska naturalnego. Integralność oraz prawidłowe funkcjonowanie jelit istotnie wpływają na odpowiednie wykorzystanie składników paszy przez ptaki, osiągnięcie wysokich przyrostów, a tym samym założonego poziomu produkcji. Układ pokarmowy ptaków, w porównaniu z układem pokarmowym ssaków, jest stosunkowo krótki, ale trawienie oraz przesuwanie pokarmu zachodzą w szybkim tempie, a jego rozwój w pierwszych dniach po wylęgu jest bardzo intensywny.
